All That Remains

All That Remains

“He kneeled on the stones, however, in vain; they kept what they concealed; and if the face of the tomb did become a face for him it was because her two names became a pair of eyes that didn’t know him.”
—The Beast in the Jungle, Henry James
“For know there are two worlds of life and death: / One that which thou beholdest; but the other / Is underneath the grave, where do inhabit / The shadows of all forms that think and live / Till death unite them and they part no more….”
           —Prometheus Unbound, Percy Bysshe Shelley
Old graveyards, ruined institutions, abandoned buildings, ghost towns…those forlorn places that have slipped into the space between still-being and almost-forgotten. In the stillness at the close of day one can feel the shadowed remnants of those once of this earth and now of that mysterious Elsewhere…still-being, not forgotten.
