Hello, nice to screen you…

Hello, nice to screen you…

Café, Wednesday afternoon, 3:14.
Hiding from the dead end of August, alone with my caffeine.
Five escapees hiding with me, also alone—at least, alone apart from the screens.
Powerful and constant companions, these screens,
filled with vast and engaging things.
Five faces caught in tractor beams.
Engage repulsor beam—proves no match for these machines.
Coffee cup is free to dream.

“If boredom is the great emotion of the TV generation, loneliness is the great emotion of the Web generation. They have lost the ability to be alone, their capacity for solitude. And losing solitude, what have they lost?”   –William Deresiewicz, “The End of Solitude”

“The freely wandering mind of the loafer is that which best develops the intelligence.”  —Wiltold Gombrowicz
